Matwork Essentials is your perfect starting point for becoming a Pilates instructor.
It gives you a solid foundation in movement, helping you understand what you’re teaching, not just follow exercises. You’ll learn how to cue clearly, structure a class, and feel confident leading in a real studio setting.
Mat isn’t just a stepping stone. With the growth of hot mat, strength, and sculpt-style classes, it’s a really in-demand skill. Studios are looking to hire instructors who can teach both Mat and Reformer, and this is where that starts.
By the end of the course, you’ll be able to teach structured Mat classes, adapt for different bodies, and step into a studio ready to go.
Matwork Essentials combines structured online learning with in person training to ensure you feel prepared, supported, and confident stepping into studios.
You will learn:
Matwork beginner to intermediate exercise repertoire
Clear, effective cueing with the Move Cueing Framework
How to modify and progress exercises safely
Injury awareness and safe movement principles
How to teach real clients in real studios
How to create thoughtful, intelligent class plans
This course focuses on understanding why movements work, not just memorising sequences.
Students must complete the Anatomy Essentials course prior to attending the in-person practical training.

Everything you need to feel confident getting started
No prior teaching experience is required. You should have completed at 12 reformer classes prior to enrolling.
Many of our students begin their journey simply because they love Pilates and want to deepen their understanding. If you already have a background in movement or fitness, that experience will support your learning, but it’s not essential.
Each course includes a hands-on intensive where you’ll put your online learning into practice. You’ll spend time moving, observing, cueing, and teaching in a supportive and collaborative environment. Expect to learn, laugh, and leave feeling confident and inspired.
Each course varies slightly, but most students complete their training and assessments within three to six months, depending on their schedule and study pace.

Please email through copies of your certifications so we can confirm your eligibility.

If illness prevents you from attending, a valid medical certificate is required, and you’ll be offered a place in the next available course.
You’ll need a current CPR and First Aid certificate and insurance coverage before teaching. Obtaining insurance is a simple process once you’ve received your Move certificate. Some gyms or studios may also request a Cert III in Fitness, but this is uncommon.
If you already know where you’d like to teach, we recommend confirming their specific requirements. Our team will guide you through this as part of your transition into teaching.
